Final 'Harry Potter' title announced - Yahoo! News

Final 'Harry Potter' title announced - Yahoo! News: "If you go to her home page, click on the eraser and you will be taken to a room — you'll see a window, a door and a mirror.

In the mirror, you'll see a hallway. Click on the farthest doorknob and look for the Christmas tree. They click on the center of the door next to the mirror and a reef appears. Then click on the top of the mirror and you'll see a garland.

Look for a cobweb next to the door. Click on it, and it will disappear. Now, look at the chimes in the window. Click on the second chime to the right, and hold it down. The chime will turn into the key, which opens the door. Click on the wrapped gift behind the door, then click on it again and figure out the title yourself by playing a game of hangman."

BTW: It is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. My previous posting was in error. Thanks for helping me out, commenter.

Expressing Thankfulness and Appreciation

The importance of gratitude has been expressed throughout the ages. For example:

-- Buddha

Gratitude is to marriage as oil is to an engine. It needs to be applied liberally and throughout and is of such importance, that a fresh supply must be added regularly to ensure success and longevity.
-- Matthew Smith

COLOSSIANS 3:12-17
12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;
13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.
14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.
15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

The importance of gratitude cannot be overstated. A marriage that is full of gratitude is also full of romance. A marriage devoid of gratitude soon loses its flame.

Take a moment and let your sweetheart know of your love and appreciation. Create a list of the things you appreciate about your sweetie. Maybe even write it in a nice Thank You card. Include several, maybe ten, specific items that your sweetheart may not know or that you have not expressed gratitude for in a long time.

Here is part of my list to get you going.

I am grateful:
* for your beautiful eyes and the way they shine when you smile
* that you have chosen to stay home and be there for the kids. It has made a big difference in our family.
* for pumpkin pie -- yours is the best
* that you are my friend when I need to talk
* for your parents and the fine example they show to the children
* for a warm hug after a hard day at work
* for your ability to sing and play -- I love to listen to you sing
* that you cut my hair
* for how you help the kids with their school work and help keep them motivated

Romance on a Budget

An explosion of light
Originally uploaded by fabbio.
Think of the most romantic thing ever. It could be something you have done, something you would like to do or something you have heard about. Get a good picture of it in your mind. Go ahead, I'll wait.....

Let me guess. Your romantic idea is not "spend $100.00" or some other sum of money. Am I right? Of course I am. Spending money in and of itself is not romantic. However, it is a fair bet to say that your idea of romance includes spending a fair amount of money. What this says is that the romance is not in spending the money, but in what the money buys. It also means that we can be romantic without spending a lot of money. Remember, it is not the money being spent that makes the romance happen.

Of course, everyone's idea of romance is different. Some of my ideas are:
  • A trip to Hawaii
  • Dinner for 2 at a nice restaurant
  • Going to the Shakespearean festival
  • A walk along the beach holding hands
  • Going to see all the Christmas lights
  • Roasting marshmallows over a campfire.
Notice that "spend a lot of money" is missing from the list. Of course, several of the items would include spending a lot of money. But the money itself is not romantic. As an example of "romance without money", let us consider each one and see how the romance could be achieved without money being spent.

Roasting marshmallows by campfire

As mentioned before, S'mores are easy to do at home. To add to the camping ambiance, turn off all the lights, computer screens and televisions in the house and do everything by candle, flashlight or lantern. The kids love this one, too. You can even buy one of those Fireplace DVDs or a camping sound effects CD.

Note: Do not use kerosene lanterns in the house! By lantern I meant the battery powered ones. Also, be careful with candles as well.

Going to see the Christmas lights

This one is already cheap, if there are lights close by your home. And it is Christmas time. Of course. most holidays include some sort of public displays. There are fireworks and parades in the warmer months. Keep in mind that most towns have various public activities throughout the year and keep your eyes open for the local events to enjoy.

One thing our town does is has Santa Claus ride through town on the fire truck. Later, the kids can sit on Santa's lap and there are treats for all. Maybe its not all that romantic-sounding, but the kids enjoy it and it makes for an inexpensive break for the parents.

A walk along the beach holding hands

I love the beach. Of course, living in a desert 1500 miles from the nearest ocean means that the simple and inexpensive sounding walk along the beach will probably cost me about $1000.00.

First, we can walk holding hands without a beach being involved. It is fun to walk together and with the kids. It is great exercise and gives you an opportunity to talk and see the world at a slower pace. It can be done is all sorts of weather. Walking is even fun in the snow.

Also, part of the fun of the beach is going swimming. I know that swimming pools are not the ocean, but they are a lot cheaper. Swimming is also very good for you and the kids love to splash around in the water.

Going to the Shakespearean festival

We are lucky to have a top-notch Shakespearean theater company in our state. Of course, it is on the other end of the state and going is usually a 2 to 3 day affair. Of course, entertainment of that caliber does not come cheap either. The ticket prices are pretty steep, but worth it when I can afford it. The price is not that for a walk on the beach, but it is still expensive.

Most communities have community theater. The local high schools also perform plays. While not the world-class acting available at pricier venues, they are still a lot of fun and a whole lot less money.

Of course, little kids aren't going to be able to go, but once they are a little older the kids enjoy seeing these plays as well. Often there will be some acquaintance performing which makes it even funner.

Dinner for 2 at a nice restaurant

A nice evening out at a fine restaurant can be both romantic and expensive. Getting dressed up and being waited on while having uninterrupted conversations has a lot to be said for it.

With just a little preparation, a nice dinner can be had at home. Get out the nice table cloth, the good dishes and fine linen. Put on a CD of your most romantic music. Fix your sweetie's favorite meal and serve it by candle light. Be sure and get dressed up like you were going out.

A dinner like this is a great way to show your kids what good manners look like as well.

A trip to Hawaii

Going to Hawaii is always considered romantic. I want to go one day and find out. Sure sounds romantic to me. It also sounds like a lot of money.

One thing to do is have a luau at home. First make some leis and grass skirts. Have a meal with glazed ham, fresh fruit and tropical drinks. Put on Beach Boys music and dance. Everyone needs to dress in their swim suits or Hawaiian wear. This can be a lot of fun in the winter when it is cold outside. Oriental Trading Com has lots of fun stuff in the Everything Luau section.

Inviting another family or 2 over can make the luau even funner for both the adults and the kids.

I hope this has given you some ideas to have romance even with budget restraints and with little children. Other ideas for romance on a budget:

Two thoughts come to mind when pondering this verse. First, my sweetheart is a gift from God. Such a gift is a treasure to me. After being married for years, it might be easy to become complacent about my wife and our relationship. How much better it is to treat your sweetheart as a precious treasure!

Second, how blessed of the Lord I am to have received this gift. I have received much from the hand of the Lord. One of His greatest gifts to me is the wonderful woman whom I call "wife". She has been a "good thing" in my life and I have indeed found favour of the LORD in her.

Marriage on Television

arroyo TV
Originally uploaded by reddirtrose.
I had a couple of separate thoughts come together today.

The first thought was about the number boys that are growing up in homes without fathers. There are so many single mothers either due to divorce, death, fathers abandoning their families and children concieved out of wedlock. Some sources say that as many as 50% of children will spend at least part of their childhood with only one parent. As wonderful as mothers and women are, boys want and need a male role model to show them how a man acts. When there is not a father to provide this role model, it must come from somewhere else. If that role model is to come from TV, I would be hard pressed to name one that I like.

The second thought come from working on getting my book ready for printing. I have been re-reading some my favorite things of what I had posted before. Topics like respect, humor, couresty, faithfulness, undestanding and gratitdue are common. The practice of these virtues is what makes a for a marriage that is not only strong but enjoyable.

The thoughts of a strong marriage combined with the lack of role models for young boys combined to compose this question: What is a good example of a role model for a married couple on TV? A marriage in which the couple:
* Treats each other with respect
* Doesn't critize, belittle and complain
* Is faithful
* Works out problems together with courage and humor
* Likes each other
* Demostrates the attributes and attitudes that others would like to have in their own marriages

Here is what I thought of:
* The Dick Van Dyke Show
* The Cosby Show

So I asked my sweeheart:
* The Brady Bunch
* Leave it to Beaver

I asked a friend:
* Mad About You

I asked another friend:
* The Donna Reed Show
* Bewitched

None of these answers came quick. It took us all a moment to come up with the answer.
It wasn't meant as a trick question. I admit I do not watch a lot of television, but Mad About You ended in 1999. The others are even older. A bunch are even only black and white. Hasn't there been a single happy, strong and supportive marriage on TV since 1999?

Turn that coin over and ask the opposite question: Are there any bad examples of marriages on TV? Are there any shows in which couples that argue, belittle, cheap, lie, blame, critize and are otherwise unpleasant to each other? Of course there are. There are entire genres dedicated to bad marriages. Soap operas, reality TV, and a lot of sitcoms portray marriage and couples at their worst.

Combine reality TV with a soap opera and your get Divorce Court. The dissolution of a marriage and the destruction of the family is now considered entertainment. Divorce Court represents the atithesis of a role model for married couples.

Where should a couple turn to for relationship role models? My sweetie adn I are lucky in that her parents are still together and my are as well. We get to spend quite a bit of time and see what it takes to make a marriage work for the long haul. We are also being an example to our children so they can know what to expect from a good marriage.

Who are your role models for marriage?

Reader Poll: Most Romantic Film Ever

Here is a simple readers poll. To participate, post your comments in the comments. Simple, no? I'll recap the results in a later posting.

Today's poll question: What is the most romantic film ever?

A romantic film has to appeal to both husband and wife. No chick-flick or Rambo movies. Well, unless your hubby likes chick-flicks. I don't.

Also, it needs to be PG or better. No R, X, M, NC-17, or "not-rated because the rating board couldn't stand to watch" films. This is a family site and will remain so.

Ok, here are my candidates:
* Princess Bride
* Casablanca
* Legend of Zorro.

I think "Princess Bride" wins. It has everything, even kissing, but only at the end.

Date Idea: Chocolate Factory Tours

For a fun, inexpensive date, try a tour of a chocolate factory. We have one close and it sounds like lots of fun. From their web page:

Chocolate Factory Tours: "The tour includes viewing areas of the candy kitchen and boxing areas. Also an up-close look of how our hand-dipped chocolates are made. Video presentations of How Chocolate is made and the History of Mrs. Cavanaughs Candies are viewed in the theatre room. There are also plenty of delicious samples and treats throughout the tour."

Spend an hour enjoying the sights, sounds and smells of chocolate. Free samples to boot.

Of course, the kids would love to join you for this one.

Unexpected Opportunity

Usually my sweetie and I don't spend any time together in the morning. She gets up to go excercise and I am gone to work before she gets back. She says good bye as she leaves. Its not a problem as neither of us are morning people anyway.

However, we had an unexpected opportunity to spend some time together. It was a rare treat for us both. I drive in a carpool but had to drive alone today. I decided to sleep in a little bit since I had to drive myself. My sweetie got up and left as usual. A few minutes later she returned. Her walking partner wasn't able to go with her.

"Wanna go for a walk with me?"

"It will take me a couple of minutes to get ready."

"I'll wait."

We ended up walking for quite a while and then eating breakfast together, all because my sweetheart saw an unexpected opportunity and asked me to join her.

OK, I had planned on catching up on some sleep. But walking in the cool air of the morning andconversing uninterrupted with my best friend were much better than being lazy in bed for a few extra minutes.

When plans fall through, maybe is not a bad thing. It might just be an unexpected opportunity.

Romantic Bible Verses: Sowing and Reaping

heart-shaped mini-tomato
Originally uploaded by iz*source.

After being on vacation for over a week, I took on the task of weeding the garden. Our garden is just a small one. This year we planted peas, carrots, tomatoes in 2 varieties, cucumbers, and swiss chard. For some reason, the carrots never came up but everything else did really well.

The peas and the swiss chard have been on for a while. As a matter of fact, the peas are all done and I pulled them up with the weeds. After the weeds and the peas were removed from the garden, I noticed out first tomatoes and cucumbers were ready. The garden is now back in shape and my sweetie is in tomato heaven.

Working in the garden reminds me of the simple yet profound "law of the harvest". Simply put it is: you harvest what you plant. This law is found in Galatians 6:7-10
7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
10 As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.

Consider how silly it would be to plant carrot seeds and expect pumpkin, or to plant peas and expect an apple tree. A gardener knows what is planted in the spring determines what is harvested months later. The decisions are made and the work performed long before the fruits are expected.

Of course, planting does not guarantee the harvest. The plants need care. They require proper amounts of sunshine, water, feeding and weeding to thrive and produce a bounteous harvest. Daily weeding and care makes the garden easy to care for and a joy to behold. Neglecting the weeding stifles the plants and makes a for a much harder task. The weeds rob the growing plants of needed water and food, and if allowed to remain, can even kill the desirable plants. Ongoing, thoughtful care of the garden will produce better results than extended periods of negligence followed by intermittent times of effort and attention.

There are many applications of the law of the harvest to marriage and I expect to visit this topic later.

What is being sown? How is it being cared for? Each act of benevolence and kindness plants a seed that can, in the future, produce a harvest of joy and love. Daily care and attention applied to your sweetheart ensures that the seeds will sprout, grow and thrive. Similarly each act of spite, discourtesy and malice also plants a seed. These seeds will also grow, producing anger and distrust.

Be sure to keep your garden planted with good seeds and to keep the weeds out by daily care and attention.

Weekly Date Night

Candle light
Originally uploaded by 1_ralf.
In church a couple of weeks ago, the topic for discussion was "improving the relationship between husband and wife". There were a group of men, most of whom had grown kids and had been married for a long time. My sweetie and I have been married 17 years and I was one of the younger men in the crowd. It was a rare opportunity to learn from the voice of experience.

One common thought was the importance of planning, scheduling and having a date with your sweetheart on a regular, weekly basis. Some weak objections were raised about not having enough time. The response to this objection is it depends on your priorities. Our lives are so full and our time so occupied that it takes planning to make a regular date night happen.

Each of us has the same 60 minutes in an hour and 24 hours in a day. There is not time to do everything, but there is time to do the important stuff. Those men who seemed to have the longest, happiest marriages made continued courtship one of the important things in their life and thier marriage. Some of those precious minuites each week were dedicated to their most important relationship.

They also mentioned how important it was to actually schedule the time. For the really important tasks in life, we write them down, block out the calendar, and protect that time from other conflicts. Do the same with your date night.

Some ways to help ensure a date happens is to pre-pay for the event. Movies and plays allow you to buy tickets in advance. The same goes for sporting events. A gift certificate or a reservation at a fancy restaurant at the top floor of some hotel with a great view can also help in motivating a date. Another trick is to invite another couple to double date with you. Its fun and harder to back out on.

Invite your sweetie on a date today.

BTW: The other readers would love to hear some of the unique, inexpensive dates that you and your sweetie have enjoyed. Post them in the comments for all to get ideas. Remember this is a kid friendly site.

Working overtime

a very, very bad place
Originally uploaded by autowitch.
Many thanks to those of you who have stayed with during my "break". As I mentioned before, I converted this blog into a book, a blook if you will. The blog book. That took a lot of time and energy away from actually writing the blog.

On top of the book, I have been working a lot of overtime for the past several weeks. Being a "bit miner" or computer programmer, I can work at work and work at home when need be. The project was running late and so I got to work late for several weeks running. Working late night after night means a lot of time away from wife and kids. However, my family was very supportive and understanding. Thanks guy, I love you all.

What are some tricks to keeping romance alive when the amount of time to be together is limited? I have a few thoughts.

First, keep the flame burning bright with lots of affection and communication before the overtime starts. A wife or husband who is feeling loved and appreciated will be more understanding of a temporary lack of affection and communication. A fire that is buring brightly can be easily tended by adding the occasional log. A fire that has died down to glowing embers might be extinguished without constant tending.

Next, continue to give small tokens of affection. There are lots of things that can be done that don't take any time at all. Send a romantic card, buy some flowers for no reason, leave a note and a small candy. Let your sweetie know they are still in your thoughts, even if you aren't able to spend the time together you would like to.

Also, have something to look forward to. Make plans on what you can do after the overtime ends. It might be a get-away or dinner and a movie. Make it something your sweetie will enjoy. Anticipation can be very romantic.

Lastly, make time to communicate. Even though I was working lots and lots of hours, I took some time to spend with my wife and kids. For example. I starting reading Harry Potter to my daughter. It only cost me a few minutes an evening, but it helped my wife and gave my kid a few minutes of "daddy time". Even if you can't spend a lot of time, spend what time you can.

Working overtime or going out of town on business can put a strain on any marriage. Keep your relationship burning brightly by continually adding fuel to the flame.

Date Idea: Outdoor Theater

Mountain Theater
Originally uploaded by kimretta.
Summer is a great time of year for entertainment. One thing we really like doing is attending outdoor plays and concerts. If the weather is nice, it can make for a really nice, out of the box, date. If the weather is not so nice, it can be one of those thing you laugh about over the years.

We have attended several concerts and plays over the years including:
* A rock concert in the mountains
* The symphony playing as part of the 4th of July celebration
* Semi-professional plays presented in a mountain amphitheater
* Amateur plays in local parks
* Local bands playing in a plaza

Again this year there are lots of different events to choose from, with all sorts of price range. Many local events are free or inexpensive enough to bring the whole family. Others are more expensive and might be appropriate for a special occasion like an anniversary.

Some tips for attending outdoor events:
* Be prepared for changes in weather. The tempurature might start out hot and end fairly cool. A blanket, umbrella and jacket are always a good idea
* Bug repellent
* Some events allow lawn chairs, others do not. Find out in advance.
* Arrive early. Many outdoor events are first-come seating.
* Bring a deck of cards or other entertainment to pass the time while waiting for the event to begin

Step outside the box and enjoy some fine entertainment in the great outdoors. If you know of any inexpensive outdoor events that people might like to attend, add that information as a comment to this post.

Romantic Tips for Married Couples: The Book

You may wonder why its been so long since my last post. I will tell you. As noted earlier, there have been over 250 posting to Romantic Tips for Married Couples. As much as I have enjoyed writing these tips for both husbands and wives, a website leaves a few things to be desired. The most obvious is it ties you to the computer and to the Internet. The information isn't available everywhere, you have to access it from the computer which is tied to the Internet. Believe it or not, not everyone lives on the Internet.

About this time, I decided to do something special for my sweetie's birthday. My sweetheart loves gifts that are not just store bought. She likes gifts that have some personal investment involved. As I thought about it, I realized I had invested almost 10 years studying and 2 years writing about romance within marriage and had learned quite a bit on the subject. With the help of a friend, I pulled the postings from this site into a real, printed on paper, book. This book is dedicated to my sweetie and the preface is written to her explaining the origin of the book and how I feel about her.

Don't get me wrong, I love having the website. A book does not allow for as much feedback as the website. Also, a book is static. Once written, that is all there is. The website continues to grow and expand over time. The website compliments the book by giving additional ideas not found in the book. The book expands the role of the website by providing this information outside the cyber world and giving it a physical manifestation in the real world.

The book itself is about 6 inches by 9 inches and over 125 pages in length. The table contents lists each article and well as the date that it was printed. The posting date proved to be an interesting aspect of printing the book. Some of the posting assumed some sort of time frame like Christmas time, or Valentine's Day, or some other day of the year. This assumption didn't translate will into print. The next printing of the book will probably better address that issue.

This first printing of the book was a short run. There were only 25 copies. Of those first 25, less than 10 remain. If you wish to get a copy of this book, email me at m0smith@gmail.com. They would make a great gift for newlyweds.

The cost will be $9.95 plus shipping. As stated above, there are only a few left. Once these are gone, you will have to wait for the next printing. This price will probably also go up with subsequent printings.

Thanks to everyone for your wonderful comments.

UPDATE: Bad news: the first printing is all gone. Good news: The books is now available on Amazon for $14.95. It has been renamed, updated, reorganized and some fun illustrations were added.

The Meaning of Love

Love!!
Originally uploaded by fanz.
Love is one of those interesting words in English. It has so many meanings. Consider the following:
* I am in love with my wife
* I love my children
* I love my dog
* I love pizza
* I love this hotel room
* I love autumn
* The score was 20-love

Obviously I don't love my wife in the same way I love pizza. Yet, we use the same word to express the deep abiding passion that exists between husband and wife as we use to express the flavor of some food. Looking in the dictionary, there are over 17 different meanings to the word love. I can be a noun or a verb, active or passive.

There are two separate phrases involving love to consider. The phrases are "in love" and "for love". "In love" means deeply or passionately enamored. "For love" is defined as out of compassion; with no thought for a reward.

In love describes a state or feeling. I am in love with my sweetheart. That describes how I feel about her. It is an emotional state. However, as noted before, emotions are transitory. Emotions only exist in the here and now.

For love describes an action and a purpose. Think of all the things you do just because you love your sweetie. How many things does your sweetheart do for you? It is these acts of selfless benevolence done "for love" that engenders being "in love".

To remain "in love", do things "for love".

Father's Day is fast approaching. For some reason it does not receive the attention of Mother's Day. Even so, it is important to honor our fathers and grandfathers. Here's the problem, what to get for dad?

Mother's Day is easier: a card, flowers, chocolates, and jewelry. But fathers are harder to buy for. My sweetie asked me today what I wanted and I seriously couldn't think of anything. I have everything I need and most everything I want. I am so hard to buy for.

Well, if you want to get some different ideas for dad, try The Swiss Army Knife store. They have lots of stuff for dads, even if knifes are not his thing.

BTW: This is not a hint, I have a knife. I'll think of something.

Keep In Touch

Consider the wonder of human skin. It conceals our gross looking inwards in a rather attractive covering. When exposed to the sunlight, it produces Vitamin D. Skin also protects the body from damage and disease. It helps to cool the body when hot and warm the body when cold. Another important feature of skin is its ability to communicate: the cheeks flush red when a person is embarassed or excited, pales with ilness or fear, green with sea-sickeness.

More to the point, the skin contains lots of nerve receptors. There are many different kinds of receptors. There are receptors for detecting mechanical stimulation, pain, heat, and location. Just as the types of nerve receptors varies, so does their density in the skin. Certain parts of the skin are more sensitive than others due to a higher number of nerve receptors per square inch. Of special note is that the hands and lips have a higher concentration of pleasure receptors.

Human skin is designed to feel, to touch and be touched. Engaged couples and newlyweds spend a lot of time touching: holding hands, kissing, hugging, tickling, running fingers through hair and so forth. Touching is an important aspect of human courtship and relationships.

Of course, its as important after marriage to touch is it is during courtship. Here some ideas, inc ase you've forgotten:
* running your finger through your sweetie's hair
* a neck and back rub
* kissing
* hugging
* foot and hand massages

Holding hands is a great way to touch and be touched.

Google Heart is a strange page that includes a bouncing heart, ways to say I Lov You in several languages and a search for greeting cards.

Google love you.

Clean Romantic Humor

Believe it or not, this is the one subject that I have the hardest time finding
humor on, even though I have a clean humor page and a romantic tips for married couples page. Most relationship humor is demeaning to either men or women or its just not fit for mixed company. Below are a few links you might find appropriate:

This one is a personal story of how the best laid plans go astray.

Not really a joke, but where to look for jokes.

Last Minute Mother's Day Gift Ideas

Mother's Day, like I've said before, is a great time to honor those special women in our lives: mothers, grandmothers and sweethearts. As is customary, we give gifts to these women. My sweetie helped pick hers out, so she knows what she is getting. Her mother is getting a nice gift I think she will really like. Grandma is getting tomatoes, which she really enjoys. For my mom, still pondering that one.

If you are stuck, I've included links to some links to Mother's Day gifts below.
